Stop Talking! I Need My Coffee First! Salt Lake City
I don’t know about you, but when I’m surrounded by traffic and tall buildings in Salt Lake City, Utah I need some coffee to make it through the day. Which coffee shops should I go to?! Luckily, Salt Lake City has a few unique places that get my day started quickly, while also enticing me to come back in the evening with both hipster atmospheres and dark-roasted perfection.

The Rose Establishment
The Rose Establishment is very hip and trendy. It has a seat-yourself layout and they have quite a few options in this category. They also have a table full of games if you are there with a group. From what I can tell this was a popular place to hold interviews as well. The only downfall was no WiFi so I had to wait for a ‘post’ opportunity. I ended up ordering the Smashed Avocado Tartine before the hike; it was delicious and exactly what I needed to hold me over until dinner. It also came with a little side salad that was nicely dressed with a light lemon dressing. This place definitely earned its spot on my top 10’s!
Café on 1st
During my few weeks in SLC, I have found that no matter the time I come to Cafe on 1st, I’m able to find a spot to sit that’s close to an outlet (which becomes a necessity!). It was never too extremely crowded there, even on the weekend. There were couches everywhere, that several lovebirds were cuddling on… but the overall set up was optimal to fit as many people as possible while also maintaining a decent level of comfort.
Do you want to snack on some yummy food while pondering what kind of holistic necklace you should buy? Do you want to sip a signature chai and contemplate whether a geode would round out your decor? Well, my friend enter Cafe Solstice located within the Dancing Crane in SLC. The Dancing Crane is a spiritual coven you go to if you want to align your chakra…but after that, Cafe Solstice is where you will go to eat fresh lunches that won’t weigh you down and a *muah* latte!
Publik Coffee Roasters
Cinnamon Toast and a peppermint mocha was the first thing after my morning hike in SLC that made for the perfect coffee break here at Publik Coffee Roasters (Yes I know it’s not Christmas anymore!). This spacious spot hosts two floors, lots of seating, and outlets make this an appealing spot for students and those looking to work while sipping and savoring. A friend I met a few weeks back in Arizona was here who was doing homework and munching on avocado toast, something that I’d probably be doing with frequency if I lived in the area; at least until the avocado famine happens and I cry myself into a bacon-frenzy!
What’s not to love about this Alchemy Coffee?! Amazing coffees (really, the americanos were top notch), comfortable and cool environment and a couple of super friendly ladies working the bar. They even have a few vegan options and recommendations too?! Oh hell yeah! Sold. Few outside chairs, but the inside is comfy.
As a constant traveler/college student, I’m constantly looking for the next best place to chill at and blog. Knowing that, Watchtower café is definitely a diamond in the rough. If you love superheroes and all things nerdy this is the place to be… For the food menu, to decoration, to the bathroom keys… These guys have thought about every little detail to make it such a pleasant experience! The staff here are as knowledgeable as they are friendly; they also do requests for dynamic foodies. Oh! They also know the menu inside out!
Sugar House Coffee
Sugar House Coffee is just a cute and comfortable coffee house large enough to study or chat. When faced with the menu, I chose to get what I thought was a medium chai but it massive compared to what I’m used to (Venti)! The chai wasn’t very sweet, but it was just the kick I needed. The cashier and the barista were both very pleasant and told me about various touristy areas to go to. Regardless of whether there are a lot of people or not that many, Sugarhouse delivers in efficiency. With about 5 people ahead of us, I still got my drink within a good 4-5 minutes after ordering! The coffeehouse itself was filled with people. Some were on their laptops studying by the windows while others were chatting and catching up. There are also benches outside for people. Their parking lot is huge, though it was almost full when I got there.
This place was interestingly meh, despite its’ name. Decent location, long hours, it was one of the few places in downtown SLC where I could grab a dessert late (until 10pm). The problem is that the crepe was not very good, and their blended iced hot chocolate was mostly just ice. If you’re looking for a cool hipster vibe, somewhere quiet to work, or a late-night place to hang out, this is your guy. If you’re looking for great dessert past ten, you’ll have better luck at the Cheesecake Factory.
Raw Bean Coffee
Raw Bean Coffee was a quaint place that was within walking distance of my camping spot in SLC and since I was on the hunt for a white chocolate mocha I was pleasantly surprised to taste the one they offered here, and it was pretty good. They have a small inside area downstairs and then if you go up the stairs there is a comfy area to sit and relax and watch the people go through drive thru below. Nice open area upstairs and it was nice to hang out on the couch and visit before I went out to continue exploring the city.
Jack Mormon Coffee
Jack Mormon Coffee starts every morning with single-origin coffees that are roasted daily. During my morning rush I was able to call ahead my order (which is a rare service), and they’ve shown me that I don’t have to add cream or sugar to mask the taste of aged, icky blended coffee anymore. The staff is friendly and well informed – they helped me make selections of new coffees all three times I visited – and they even tracked my purchases when I special ordered a couple bags of beans to send back home. Great experience and will definitely make this a frequent stop when traveling through SLC.
